Good to know

Icewine is made from grapes left on the vine until they freeze in winter, then picked and pressed while frozen. Only a few drops of sweet, concentrated juice come from each grape, which is why a bottle is small and dear. Ontario's rules require the grapes to be picked at -8°C or colder.

The best time to taste it is January, when the Niagara Icewine Festival brings tastings and events to wineries across the region. Most of these wineries pour it in the tasting room all year.

Questions

When is the Niagara Icewine Festival?

Every January. Festival events at each winery show on our events page once announced.

Can I taste icewine all year?

Yes, at most wineries that make it. Some charge extra for an icewine pour.

Is there an icewine tour?

Yes: our Icewine route itinerary.

What does icewine taste like?

Very sweet, with bright acidity: think honey, apricot and lychee. Usually served chilled, in a small glass, with dessert or cheese.

Profiles are written from each winery's own site and reviewed before publishing. Regions are Wine Country Ontario's two: Niagara-on-the-Lake & Area and the Niagara Benchlands & Area.

Featured listings are paid for by the winery. They are shown above other listings for the day or region and labelled wherever they appear. Everything else is ordered by time, and editorial picks are not for sale.
